Suvi Solkio (Aarnio)

”I’m a multidisciplinary artist, a grassroot powerhouse and a self-proclaimed expert in failure. I live and work in an old village shop called Pineapple Paradise nearby Turku, Finland together with my family.

I’m thrilled to bits about intelligent scandals, being cleverly cheated, girlish humor and the expertise by experience. Whereas elitism, labelling, middle-aged patriarchy, bad manners and unquestionable norms make my blood boil. With my work, I aim at amusing myself, entertaining the others and creating space for the collective, cathartic and carnivalesque involvement. And in doing so, I often employ unorthodox artistic methods such as embroidery, burlesque and social engagement.

Since graduating in 2001 (Tampere Polytechnic / School of Art and Media / Public Art), I’ve worked from public to private sector as an artist, curator and coordinator. My past employers and clients include e.g. the Arts Promotion Centre Finland / Taike (2015-18), the Dance Centre of Western Finland (2012-13), the City of Turku / Turku 2011 European Capital of Culture (2009-12), Wäinö Aaltonen Art Museum (2005-08), and Raumars Artist in Residence Program (2002-05). In addition to Finland, her works have been presented in Ireland, Sweden, UK, Germany, Croatia and the United States. More about my professional work can be found from www.suvisolkio.fi”
